A powder-coated aluminium front door needs very little maintenance: wash it with lukewarm water and a neutral detergent every six months, or every three months near the sea, check and lubricate the lock and the hinges or pivot once a year, and touch up any deep scratch in the paint straight away. Avoiding abrasive products and solvents takes care of the rest.
This guide goes through each step and explains why it is worth doing.
Why does maintenance matter?
Powder coating protects the aluminium and gives it its colour. Over time, dust, pollution, salt and rain residue settle on the surface. Left there for long, they dull the finish and, in aggressive environments, can attack the paint at its weakest points. Regular cleaning removes those deposits before they do any harm.
The hardware works every day. A lock that sticks or a hinge that creaks is rarely a fault; it is almost always a lack of lubrication or a small adjustment.
Cleaning the powder-coated surface
How often
- Inland, in town or countryside: every six months.
- Coastal or industrial areas: every three months.
- After building work: as soon as possible, to remove cement and mortar dust.
How to clean it
- Remove loose dust with water or a damp cloth.
- Wash with lukewarm water and a neutral detergent, such as diluted washing-up liquid.
- Use a soft sponge or cloth. A soft-bristled brush helps on grooved panels.
- Rinse with clean water.
- Dry with a soft cloth to avoid marks, especially on dark colours.
What to avoid
- scouring pads, steel wool and abrasive sponges;
- solvents, thinners, acetone and products containing chlorine;
- pressure washers held too close to the surface;
- cleaning in strong sun, because the detergent dries quickly and leaves marks.
Hardware: lock, hinges and pivot
Lock
Once a year, or whenever the key starts to go in stiffly, apply a lubricant made for lock cylinders. Avoid thick oils, which collect dust. On a multi-point lock, check that every locking point engages without forcing.
Hinges
Check that the leaf has not dropped and that it closes without rubbing on the frame. Many hinges can be adjusted. If the door starts to rub, ask the installer to adjust it before the seal wears out.
Pivot
On pivot doors, keep the floor pivot area free of sand and dust. If the door has hydraulic closing, check that the closing speed stays the same and ask for adjustment when needed.
Seals and threshold
The seals stop air and water getting through the door. Once a year:
- clean them with water and neutral soap;
- check that they are not torn, dried out or coming away;
- clean the threshold channel and the drainage holes, if there are any.
A worn seal is easy to replace and makes a big difference to comfort and noise.
Glass and stainless steel
Glass
Clean with a glass cleaner, without letting it run down onto the powder coating. Check the seal around the glass.
Stainless steel
Stainless steel handles and details are cleaned with water and neutral soap, or with a stainless steel cleaner, always following the direction of the brushed finish. Near the sea, even good quality stainless steel can pick up small surface stains if it is not cleaned. They come off with regular cleaning.
Wood-effect finishes
A wood-effect finish on aluminium is cleaned just like a plain powder-coated door. It does not need sanding, varnishing or treatment against insects or damp. Use the same neutral products and avoid abrasives, which can mark the woodgrain pattern.
Touching up the powder coating
Small surface scratches may need nothing at all. Scratches that reach the metal should be dealt with:
- Clean and degrease the area carefully.
- Apply touch-up paint in the door's RAL colour and gloss level, in thin coats.
- Near the sea, do it as soon as you notice the scratch.
Ask the manufacturer or installer for the exact colour and gloss reference and, if possible, keep it with your house paperwork.
A simple maintenance schedule
| Task | Inland | Coastal |
|---|---|---|
| Wash the surface | Every 6 months | Every 3 months |
| Lubricate the lock | Yearly | Every 6 months |
| Check hinges or pivot | Yearly | Yearly |
| Check seals and threshold | Yearly | Yearly |
Signs that it is time to replace the door
Maintenance greatly extends the life of a door, but there are cases where replacement makes sense:
- the leaf is bowed and does not close properly even after adjustment;
- the profiles have no thermal break and the hall is cold or gets condensation;
- the powder coating has deteriorated over large areas, not just in the odd scratch;
- the lock no longer gives the security you want and the leaf cannot take a multi-point lock;
- the door design no longer suits the house after the front has been remodelled.
On doors with an infill panel, sometimes replacing the panel is enough. In other situations, a new leaf or a new door is usually the longer-lasting solution.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I clean an aluminium front door?
In towns or the countryside, cleaning every six months is usually enough. By the sea or in industrial areas, the usual advice is every three months, because salt and pollution build up faster.
Can I use bleach or degreaser on the door?
It is not recommended. Use only lukewarm water with a neutral detergent. Harsh products, solvents and abrasives can dull or damage the powder coating.
How do I deal with a scratch in the powder coating?
Clean the area and apply touch-up paint in the door's RAL colour and gloss level. For deep scratches near the sea, touch up as soon as possible so corrosion does not start on the exposed metal.
Does a wood-effect door need varnishing?
No. A wood-effect finish on aluminium is cleaned the same way as a plain powder-coated door, with water and a neutral detergent.
