How to choose an aluminium front door for a detached house

A practical guide to deciding the model, opening type, finish and glazing of your front door, and what to ask the manufacturer before you request a quote.

The front door is the first thing people see of a house and the part you use most every day. Choosing well means thinking about three things at once: the architecture of the façade, the way you live in the house, and the build itself. This guide helps you put those decisions in order.

1. Start with the façade, not the brochure

Before looking at models, look at the house. A contemporary façade, with straight lines and smooth materials, usually calls for a restrained door: a flush panel, fine grooves, a bar handle. A traditional house, with stone or mouldings, suits raised panels and decorative glass.

A few questions help:

  • Should the door stand out or blend into the façade?
  • What colours and materials are already around it (stone, render, timber, window frames)?
  • Is there a porch, or is the door exposed to sun and rain?

2. Decide on the opening type

The most common options for a house are three:

  • A hinged door, the classic opening that suits most entrances.
  • A door with a side glass or panel, when the opening is wider than a single leaf and you want natural light in the hallway.
  • A pivot door, for wide or very tall openings where the door is the centrepiece of the façade. It can run up to the ceiling and sit flush with the wall cladding.

If you are still at design stage, talk to your architect and the manufacturer early. It is easier to design the opening for the right door than to adapt a door to an opening that is already built.

3. Choose the finish with a sample in your hand

Aluminium gives you a lot of freedom with finishes:

  • Smooth or textured powder coating, in any RAL colour. Textured anthracite and black are popular on contemporary homes.
  • Wood effect, for the warmth of timber with the upkeep of aluminium.
  • Stainless steel inlays and decorative glass, for a touch of shine or light.

Always ask to see the physical sample. The light on site changes how a colour looks.

4. Think about light and privacy

A narrow vertical glass strip along the door, or a fixed side glass, brings daylight into the hallway without exposing the interior. Frosted glass protects privacy; clear glass opens up the view. On a north-facing or dim entrance, this detail makes a real difference day to day.

5. Do not forget the handle

The handle changes the character of the door. A vertical bar in stainless steel or black draws a strong line; a recessed handle in a vertical slot keeps the door clean and discreet. Choose it with the model, not at the end.

6. Prepare the conversation with the manufacturer

To get a useful proposal, gather what you have:

  • approximate size of the opening (height and width);
  • a photo of the current entrance or of the opening on site;
  • the style you are after and the colours you like;
  • the project timeline.

Ask for an itemised quote and the payment terms, so you can compare proposals with everything in view. Ask too who will install the door in your area: Portancora puts you in touch with a local installer and follows the project through until the door is in place.

See it before you decide

If you are torn between two styles, try the visualiser: upload a photo of your entrance and see a simulation of a Portancora door in your own space. It is an illustration, but it helps a lot to choose a direction. Then talk to us and we will turn the idea into a proposal.

Frequently asked questions

Can an aluminium front door look like timber?

Yes. Wood-effect finishes give an aluminium door the look of timber. It is worth seeing a physical sample before you decide, because colour on screen is never quite the real thing.

When does a pivot door make sense?

When the opening is wide or tall and the door is the centrepiece of the façade. The door turns on a pivot and can sit flush with the wall cladding. It is best decided early, at design stage, because the opening is planned around it.

Can I choose any colour?

At Portancora, powder coating can be done in any RAL colour, smooth or textured. The team will help you choose the colour that works best with the façade and the windows.

Do I need exact measurements to ask for a quote?

No. Approximate sizes, a photo or a drawing are enough for a first conversation. Final measurements are confirmed before the door goes into production.
